Durable Power

of Attorney

Setting Your Affairs in Order

What is a Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA)?

A Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA) is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone  as an agent to make medical and financial decisions on your behalf in the event that you become incapacitated or unable to make decisions for yourself. It allows you to outline your preferences for medical care by allowing you to:

  • Express your healthcare wishes in advance.
  • It also allows you to choose your healthcare representative by allowing you to designate someone to make treatment decisions on your behalf, in the event you are unable to communicate your wishes due to illness or incapacitation.

When Should You Obtain an DPOA?

Typically at the age of 18. Even if you’re young and healthy, unexpected situations can arise. It gives guidance to your provider and gives clarity to your loved one. So having a DPOA in place takes the emotional stress off your loved ones and ensures peace of mind.
