Setting Your Affairs in Order

What is Notary Public?

A notary public is a state-appointed official who serves as an impartial witness to deter fraudulent signatures, while important documents are signed usually concerning general financial transactions, estates, deeds, and powers-of-attorney.

In Washington state, notaries and government officials have strict guidelines and rules they must follow when notarizing documentations.

What Documents Cannot be Notarized?

Notaries and government officials have strict guidelines and rules they have to follow when notarizing a financial or business document. Some of the reasons a document or form can’t be notarized:

  • The document or certificate is dated later than the date of notarization or backdated certificates.
  • The document signer can’t be positively identified.
  • A signer isn’t physically present.
  • The document or form is blank, has blank sections, or is missing one or more pages.
